What is a Maryland Dental Bridge?

When you’re missing a tooth, it’s easy to feel self-conscious about your smile, or even find basic things like eating or speaking a little trickier. Fortunately, there are a few different ways to replace a missing tooth without undergoing major surgery. One option that’s simple, effective, and less invasive is a Maryland dental bridge.

At Melbourne Dental Implant and Sleep Centre, we’re here to help you find the right solution for your dental needs and goals. Here’s what you need to know about Maryland bridges and whether they might be the right choice for you.

What is a Maryland Bridge?

A Maryland bridge is a fixed dental restoration that fills the gap left by a missing tooth. Instead of preparing and crowning the teeth on either side of the gap, like with a traditional bridge, a Maryland bridge uses a replacement tooth (called a pontic) that’s attached to small metal or ceramic “wings.” These wings are bonded to the back surfaces of the neighbouring teeth, meaning there’s very little impact on your natural tooth structure.

This type of bridge is particularly well-suited to replacing missing front teeth. Because it’s more conservative than other options, it’s often recommended for patients who want a minimally invasive solution or who are looking for a temporary option before getting a dental implant later on.

Maryland bridges are sometimes called resin-bonded bridges, adhesive bridges, or winged bridges, but they all describe the same basic design.

How Is a Maryland Bridge Different to Other Bridges?

Traditional dental bridges rely on crowns placed over the neighbouring teeth for support. That means we have to reshape those teeth, removing healthy enamel to make room for the crowns. While traditional bridges are strong and reliable, they do require more significant changes to your natural teeth.

A Maryland bridge, by contrast, preserves most of the enamel on your adjacent teeth. Instead of crowns, it uses a small framework that’s bonded behind your teeth, leaving the front surfaces untouched. This makes it a much more conservative option and can be a good choice if the surrounding teeth are perfectly healthy and don’t need crowns.

Compared to dental implants, Maryland bridges are non-surgical, faster to complete, and more affordable. They’re particularly popular for younger patients who may not be ready for implants yet, or for anyone who wants a fixed solution without surgery.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Maryland Bridge?

Maryland bridges work best for certain situations, and they’re not right for everyone.

They’re typically used to replace a single missing tooth at the front of the mouth, where chewing pressure is lower. They work well when the neighbouring teeth are strong, healthy, and free from large fillings or decay. There also needs to be enough enamel for the wings to bond securely.

We often recommend Maryland bridges for young adults who are still growing and can’t yet have dental implants. They’re also a good choice for patients looking for an interim solution before committing to implants later.

However, if you grind your teeth, have a deep bite, or are missing a molar (a back tooth that takes a lot of pressure), a Maryland bridge might not be the best option. The pressure from biting forces could cause the bridge to fail prematurely. In those cases, traditional bridges or implants are usually a better fit.

What’s Involved in Getting a Maryland Bridge?

The process for a Maryland bridge is usually straightforward and quick. It typically takes two visits to complete.

At your first appointment, we’ll assess your teeth, take digital scans or impressions, and help you choose a shade that matches your natural teeth. In some cases, we might lightly prepare the backs of your adjacent teeth to create a better bonding surface, but often this step is very minimal compared to preparing for crowns.

Once your impressions are taken, your custom bridge will be made at a dental laboratory. This usually takes about two weeks. In the meantime, we might place a temporary bridge to protect the gap if needed.

At your second visit, we’ll carefully fit the new Maryland bridge, making sure it’s comfortable and blends naturally with your other teeth. Once you and your dentist are happy with the fit, the wings are bonded securely to the neighbouring teeth using a strong dental adhesive.

Because the preparation is so minimal, many patients don’t even need anaesthetic during the procedure.

What Materials Are Used?

Maryland bridges were traditionally made with a metal framework. While metal is strong and durable, it can sometimes cause a slight greyish tint to shine through the supporting teeth, especially if they are thinner front teeth.

Thanks to advances in dental materials, all-ceramic Maryland bridges are now available. Ceramic options offer excellent strength while eliminating any risk of metal show-through, making them a great choice for patients who prioritise aesthetics.

The replacement tooth itself is usually made from porcelain or ceramic to blend in seamlessly with your natural smile.

We’ll recommend the best material for you based on the location of your missing tooth, your bite, and your aesthetic preferences.

How Long Do Maryland Bridges Last?

With good care, Maryland bridges can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years. Their longevity depends on factors like where the bridge is placed, the strength of your bite, and how well you maintain your oral hygiene.

Bridges placed at the front teeth typically last longer than those subjected to heavier chewing forces. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleans will help keep your bridge and supporting teeth healthy, allowing your bridge to last as long as possible.

While Maryland bridges are durable, it’s important to be gentle with them. Biting into very hard foods, like ice or nuts, could put too much stress on the bonded wings and potentially cause the bridge to loosen.

How to Look After Your Maryland Bridge

Caring for your Maryland bridge is pretty straightforward. You’ll need to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with a soft toothbrush and flossing carefully around and under the bridge.

Using a floss threader or water flosser can make it easier to clean underneath the replacement tooth, helping prevent plaque buildup that could weaken the bond or damage the supporting teeth.

It’s also important to keep up with your regular dental check-ups so we can monitor the health of your bridge and the teeth it’s attached to.

And just like with your natural teeth, avoid habits like chewing pens, fingernails, or opening packages with your teeth. Little things like this can go a long way in keeping your restoration strong and intact.

What Are the Advantages of a Maryland Bridge?

The biggest advantage of a Maryland bridge is how conservative it is. You don’t have to sacrifice healthy tooth structure, making it a great option for patients who value keeping their natural teeth as untouched as possible.

Other benefits include a quicker treatment time compared to implants, no surgery needed, and a more affordable cost. Maryland bridges also offer excellent aesthetics, particularly when used for front teeth where appearance really matters.

They can also be a great interim solution if you’re planning to get a dental implant later but aren’t ready yet.

What Are the Limitations?

Maryland bridges aren’t as strong as traditional bridges or implants, so they’re not ideal for replacing molars or teeth that take heavy chewing forces. Over time, the bonded wings can become loose, particularly if exposed to excessive stress or poor oral hygiene.

They’re best suited for very specific cases—mainly single front teeth with strong, healthy neighbouring teeth. Your dentist will assess your bite, teeth, and overall oral health to determine whether a Maryland bridge is a good long-term solution for you.
